Another Large Crowd Turns Out for March EBCA
By Bryan Harrison, Association News Network, Inc.

East Bay Claims, like several other associations of its kind in Northern California, has been enjoying increased membership, and attendance at the monthly luncheon meeting. The March 11, 2009 demonstrated that growth once again. A good number of adjusters were amongst the crowd of members and guests who came to hear Russ Auker, fire investigator with Ron Hall & Associates, Inc., discuss vehicel fires.

Auker, an experienced fire fighter and investigator, gave a thorough presentation on the history and ongoing developments of the problems associated primarily with vehicle speed control switches catching fire under the hood. The problem was first discovered back in 1990, or possibly earlier, but it took Ford Motor Company until as late as 2005 to change the vehicle design that had long been attributed to the cause.

The speed control switch, which controls cruise control speed settings, had long been placed very near the master brake cylinder. The switch, which runs live current constantly whether the switch is on or off, has a tendancy to get hot and spark. The spark, being adjacent to the master cylinder, ignites easily, causing a whole bunch of vehicle fires.

Though the problem has finally been addressed, according to Mr. Auker, in vehicles 2005 and newer, there are still a great many faulty ones on the road. Whether or not subrogation with Ford's insurer has become a useful avenue was not really known.
