Harry Maurer outlines extensive duties of Municipal Risk Manager at April luncheon The East Bay Claims Association welcomed one of the groups own long-time members, Harry Maurer, Risk Manager for the City of Vallejo, as the featured guest speaker at the April 9, 2008 luncheon meeting at Zio Fraedo's in Pleasant Hill. A past president of the old East Bay Adjusters Association, Harry has remained involved with the organization long after the merger with Mt. Diablo Property. Having been a Claims Manager for AC Transit before working several years for AIMS, Harry has a deep understanding of the ins-and-outs of insurance, especially with regard to municipalities. But for many of us, the simple question can often arise, "what does a risk manager do?". Harry came to speak to the EBCA on that very issue. "Originally called 'the insurance buyer' back in the 1950's," Harry explained, "it was in the '60s that muni's starting taking a closer look at costs of insurance," he said. "The name 'Risk Manager' came into play." At this point, being in charge of what insurance the CIty of Vallejo carries is just one small part of what Harry does and oversees. He deals in numerous aspects of City government involving not just the financial end of things, but working with people, and general good will. As far as evaluating potential claims, a lot comes down to frequency and severity, he said. "75 percent of companies who experience catastrophic events are no longer around," he stated. Evaluating and monitoring risks "are an ongoing endeavor," he explained. "No contract goes through the city council without going through Risk Management first," he stated flatly. By all accounts, Harry's enjoying his new job!
